What is the oil change interval on a Cummins x15? ›

* The extreme severe duty cycle (<3 mpg) has an oil drain interval of 4,500 miles (7,000 kilometers), 500 hours or 12 months—whichever occurs first.

Straight out of the gate we recommend 6000 km (3700 mile) oil changes if you are running conventional oil 15W/40. This should be a safe interval for city driving, stop and go driving, and idling.

10W-30 and 15W-40 oils meeting Cummins specifications may be used in these engines. Check the oil pressure indicators, temperature indicators, warning lights, and other gauges daily to make sure they are operational.

However, diesel engines are similar to other regular car engines in that the rule of thumb is that you should be replacing the oil roughly every 3,000 miles. This is the case if you're using standard oil, and this mileage bumps up to every 5,000 to 6,000 miles if you're using synthetic oil.

Most diesel engines need an oil change every 3,000-10,000 miles. We recommend bringing your vehicle to a diesel repair truck shop to make sure your oil change is done right.

Since 10W-30 is thinner than 15W-40, its film strength can be weaker and it can be more prone to oxidation. Therefore, high quality additives are needed to compensate for those weaknesses in order for 10W-30 to protect as well and last as long as 15W-40.
