Chia seed drinks are one of those things where you either can’t get enough of them or you hate them because of the texture. You can thank the chia seeds for that dichotomy.

You see, when you combine chia seeds with water (or any other liquid, for that matter) they form a jelly-like substance similar to thinned-out Jell-O. You can see why some people might have a hard time with that texture, right? I’ll go ahead and warn you that chia drinks do have a funny texture, so if you’re weird about textures, you might not enjoy this recipe.

But if you’re already a fan of Mamma Chia drinks and/or don’t mind unusual textures, then you’ll appreciate being able to make your own chia drinks at home. You’ll be able to create just about any flavor you can think of, and you won’t have to shell out $3-4 per bottle!

And not only are chia drinks super delicious, but you also get all sorts of health benefits from the chia seeds. Think protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, and micronutrients such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants.

But be warned: chia seeds do have a bad habit of getting stuck in your teeth, so make sure you don’t have a date or important meeting right after you drink them!

So now that you know what to expect, let me show you how to make your own copycat Mamma Chia drink so you can have all the fun, flavor, and health benefits without the price tag.

Easy Fruity Chia Drink (Copycat Mamma Chia Drink Recipe) (2)

It’s actually crazy easy to make your own chia drinks. All you need are a few ingredients and about 15 minutes to have a delicious chia seed drink that rivals even the best from Mamma Chia.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup cold water
  • 3 Tbsp. chia seeds
  • 1 cup juice of your choice (cold)
  • 1 tsp. maple syrup

Instructions

Add the water and chia seeds to a quart mason jar. Stir well to get all the seeds wet. Let stand for 10-15 minutes or until the chia seeds form a thick gel, stirring every 5 minutes to prevent clumps from forming. Once the seeds are gelled, add the juice and maple syrup and stir well to combine. Serve and enjoy!

This recipe makes (2) 1-cup servings.

You can also keep the chia drink in the refrigerator for a few days if you need to.

Recipe Notes

You can use pretty much any juice for this recipe, but these are the ones I enjoy using:

  • 100% Pomegranate juice from POM Wonderful
  • Pomegranate Cherry juice from POM Wonderful
  • Pomegranate Blueberry juice from POM Wonderful
  • Antioxidant Force juice from Smart Juice
  • Any of the antioxidant juice blends from Aldi

Just be sure to read the ingredient list before you buy your juice. Make sure it contains 100% juice, real ingredients you can pronounce, and no added sweeteners.

You can also use different sweeteners depending on your preferences. I like using these:

  • Maple syrup
  • Honey
  • Agave

Start with 1 teaspoon of sweetener. That’s usually all I need, but if you’d like your chia seed drink to be a little sweeter, you can always add more to suit your tastes.
