There are 3 types of Greek Frappe, depending on how sweet you like your coffee.

  1. Plain (skétos)– no sugar

  3. Sweet (glykós)– four teaspoons of sugar

The sugar should be added to shaker altogether with coffee and water so it can dissolve when shaking.

Those of you who prefer coffee with milk, can top the frothed coffee partially with milk and partially with water.

What do you need to make frappe coffee

There is a special frother that can be used to create the foamy consistency, but it is not required.

In fact, a co*cktail shaker is widely used.

If you don’t have any of the above mentioned, use anything you have on hand – a jar (with a lid) a wide neck bottle (that you can close so it will act as a shaker).

I have been using a thermos to make our frappe and you can do so too!

What coffee to use for traditional Greek frappe?

You will need instant coffee to make this iced coffee. The best choice is Nescafe that also has a sign frappe on its packaging, so you can’t confuse it with something else. They also have a decaf version, if needed.

Now that being said, you can make it with any instant pot coffee you like or have on hand. That’s what we do too!

Do not use ground coffee though!

Ingredients

  • 2 teaspoons Instant Coffee , see note 1
  • 1 cup Water , see note 2
  • Ice Cubes , for serving, see note 3

Instructions

  • For basic Greek Frappe: In a shaker (see note 4), combine coffee with ¼ cup of water. Close well and shake well for about 15-20 seconds.

  • Put ice in a tall glass and pour the frothed coffee over. Top with the rest of the water.

  • For Greek Frappe with milk and (or) sugar:

  • In a shaker, combine coffee, sugar (2 teaspoons or as much as you like) with ¼ cup of water. Close well and shake well. You might need to shake more as it takes some time for the sugar to dissolve.

  • Put ice in a tall glass and pour the frothed coffee over. Top with part water and part milk (the ratio is completely up to you – I recommend ½ cup water and ¼ cup milk).

  • Serve right away!

Notes

  1. If you can, look for Nescafé brand – they have special Frappe coffee. If your store does not carry this brand, just use any instant coffee.
  2. For best results, use bottled water. You might also use less water, depending on how strong you like your coffee.
  3. For best results, use large ice cubes. They don’t melt fast and won’t dilute your coffee too quickly. If you use small ice cubes, I would suggest you top the coffee with less water so.
  4. Instead of a shaker, wide-neck bottle, a jar or thermos can be used.
  5. This recipe will fill one 10-ounce/300-milliliter glass.
