Hot-buttered rum has been around for centuries, and its origins can be traced back to the 1600s. Some believe it became prevalent in the Caribbean.
At that time, molasses, a crucial ingredient in rum, was one of the most valuable products traded globally. During colonial times, the American colonists bought molasses from Caribbean plantations and distilled it into rum, which they would trade for other goods and services. Rum became a popular drink among sailors and colonists because it was readily available and relatively cheap.
One theory is that hot-buttered rum was created as a medicinal drink to cure colds and other ailments. The hot water, spices, and rum were believed to help fight off sickness and warm the body from the inside out. Another theory is that the drink was used as a way to make cheap, low-quality rum more palatable. Spices, sugar, and butter, improved the taste of the rough liquor and masked and transformed it into a delicious beverage.
During the Revolutionary War, hot buttered rum played an important role in keeping soldiers warm and in good spirits. The Continental Army often received rations of rum, and soldiers would use it to make hot buttered rum by mixing it with water and sweeteners. Soldiers used it as a bartering tool, and soldiers would trade shots of rum for supplies like blankets and shoes.
In fact, it was one of George Washington’s favorite drinks, and he even had his own recipe for it! The first American cookbook, “The American Cookery” by Amelia Simmons, included a recipe for hot buttered rum, cementing its place in American culture.
Regardless of how it originated, hot buttered rum became a festive drink and staple of winter gatherings and holiday celebrations.
