Memorial Day weekend 2024: See holiday celebrations that honor fallen soldiers (2024)

The City of Utica held its Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27, 2024. The parade started at 10 a.m. in front of Our Lady of Lourdes Church and continued north on Genesee Street, turning right onto Memorial Parkway before ending at the Parkway Recreation Center.

Branan Jacobs came out to volunteer, his father was a Petty Officer 3rd Class Edward S. Jacobs, who enlisted in the Navy during the Vietnam War. He became a Navy SEAL following his tour in Vietnam and died in 2002 from Agent Orange exposure. His dad is interred at Arlington National Cemetery. Nearly 1,000 volunteers with Wreaths Across America placed 24,000 flags on the graves of veterans at Sarasota National Cemetery in the ninth annual flag placement ceremony Saturday morning, May 25, as a part of the Memorial Day commemoration. Volunteers placed American flags on each grave, exactly 12 inches from the center of the headstone before stating the veteran's name and saluting.
